Colour and form is the bedrock of art history. The power of paint to transport the eye, animate the world and create its own, highly distinct, visual language is why this medium never dies. Paint has the power to dissolve into the subject it is describing, or to become the core subject itself. Painting locks the eye into the moment of creation: the decisive stroke, the choice of colour, the magnetism of the mark. To stand in front of a strong canvas is to hold a very intimate conversation with the movement and dance of paint. It is immediate, emotive, sensual and challenging. Over centuries it always remains alive inviting us to return and look again.
Of all mediums paint is perhaps the most mutable. Some artists choose to elevate and transform their paint into illusion. Others love the primal energy of raw pigment. Many of the most masterful contemporary painters hold a deep and expansive relationship with colour. In this show, we gather together some of the best proponents of abstract and semi abstract painting and celebrate their expressive energy, verve and daring.
Rochfort Gallery celebrates painting at its most sensual, inspiring and accessible. Established colourists with a deep wedded relationship to the landscape, lyrical masters of pigment and abstract painters making a bold statement, all come together in one show. An exhibition that just happens to include all women artists united by their chosen passion: paint.
Pigments at Play demonstrates how diverse non-figurative art can be and how deeply the subtleties of colour can run. With artists originating from Denmark, England, Israel and Australia here are a new collection of fresh modern artworks at their most immediate. In this show, Rochfort gather together some of the best proponents of abstract and semi abstract painting and celebrate their expressive energy, verve and daring. One blank canvas invites infinite invention.
