If you’re wondering why on your way home this evening why in every car you pass and along the streets people seem to be gazing skyward, or that everyone seems to be heading toward the coast, you may have had your head buried in the sand for the past few days and should probably open your browser or turn on the news. If you aren’t perplexed however, this means you know that tonight is the night of the super moon.
Tonight the moon will appear larger and more spectacular than it has in the last 70 years, as it passes closely to the earth during its monthly orbit. So, whether you’re keen to capture the perfect moon pic to upload on Instagram, or are just excited to take it all in, we have a few tips to help you achieve the best experience.
The best time and place to catch this evening’s super moon will be between moon rise and sunset along the coastline, however its expected that beaches will fill up quickly, so you will need to head down and set up early for optimal moon viewing positions.
If you are indeed looking to take the perfect shot of tonight’s lunar showstopper, Michael Christopher Brown of National Geographic recommends that you do not zoom your smartphone’s lens, as this may distort the image, and rather wait to crop your image later in the editing stages. Also try to snap the moon with other landmarks or objects in the foreground, as this will provide your pic with a comparison to show how spectacularly large this moon truly is!
If you live on the east coast, cooler temperatures are expected this evening, so it may also be wise to pick up a coat or blanket before heading out to watch the super moon. Don’t let this discourage you from heading out to witness the marvel however, as if you miss tonight’s super moon, you won’t be able to catch another of this scale until 2034!
Unfortunately, Sydneysiders and Melbournites may be left disappointed this evening, as untimely cloud cover will more than likely block much of tonight’s super moon. So if you live in either city, you may have to witness the phenomenon on your cell screen as your friends in other states catch a better glimpse.
